How to Choose the Right Sports Facility for Your Team
How to Choose a Sports Facility
Pick a facility based on surface quality, location relative to your players, and cancellation policy — in that order. Price matters, but a cheap field that wastes your time costs more than a fair one that works.
Quick take
Visit before you commit. Photos don't show drainage, noise levels, or parking chaos at 5 PM. One test session tells you more than any listing.
Start With Your Non-Negotiables
Before you search, decide what you can't compromise on:
- Sport-specific surface — a soccer team needs turf or grass, not a parking lot with painted lines
- Time windows — if your team can only practice Tuesday/Thursday 5-7 PM, that's your filter
- Max drive time — 20 minutes is the threshold where parent complaints start
- Indoor vs. outdoor — if weather regularly cancels practice, you need a roof
Everything else is negotiable. Don't fall in love with a facility's amenity list if it fails on these basics. For a deeper breakdown of amenities that actually matter, read what to look for when booking.
Evaluate the Playing Surface
The surface is where your players train. It affects injury risk, skill development, and whether practice happens at all after it rains.
Questions to ask (or check on the listing):
- When was the turf/grass last replaced or resodded?
- Is there drainage? How long after rain before it's playable?
- Are there divots, bare patches, or uneven areas?
- For indoor: what's the ceiling height? (Matters for baseball, volleyball)
If you can't visit first, look for recent photos on the booking platform. Facility listings on FieldPicker include photos and reviews from other coaches.
Compare Three Options Minimum
Never book the first facility you find. Compare at least three on these factors:
| Factor | Facility A | Facility B | Facility C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface quality | — | — | — |
| Hourly rate | — | — | — |
| Drive time (from most players) | — | — | — |
| Lights included? | — | — | — |
| Cancellation policy | — | — | — |
| Available time slots | — | — | — |
Fill in that table and the right choice usually becomes obvious. A booking marketplace lets you compare all of these on one screen.
Do a Test Booking
Book one session before committing to recurring. Pay attention to:
- Check-in process — is it smooth or do you spend 15 minutes finding someone with keys?
- Actual condition vs. listing photos
- Parking situation at your arrival time (not 2 PM on a Wednesday — 5 PM on your practice day)
- Noise levels — adjacent fields, highway, construction
- Other teams on-site — are they sharing the space? Is it crowded?
One test session saves you from a season of regret.
Think About the Full Season
A facility that works in September might not work in December. Consider:
- Lighting — sunset gets earlier. Does the field have lights? Are they extra?
- Weather backup — what happens when outdoor practice gets rained out? Do they have an indoor option? Know how to find indoor alternatives.
- Holidays and tournaments — will the facility be available during tournament season? School breaks?
- Price changes — some facilities raise rates for peak season
Watch the Cancellation Policy
This trips up more coaches than pricing does. A facility with a great rate but a "no refunds, no exceptions" cancellation policy is a money pit waiting to happen.
Look for:
- Free cancellation 24-48 hours out
- Weather cancellation clause
- Make-up credits if THEY cancel
On FieldPicker, if a facility cancels your booking, you automatically get a make-up credit. Learn how it works.
