What to Look for When Booking a Sports Field
What to Look For When Booking a Sports Field
Check the surface type, amenities, cancellation policy, and pricing transparency before you commit. A bad booking wastes money and a practice slot you can't get back.
Quick take
Surface quality and cancellation policy matter more than price. A cheap field with no lights and no refunds costs you more in the long run.
Surface Quality and Type
This is the single most important factor and the one most coaches skip.
Outdoor fields:
- Natural grass — great when maintained, terrible when it rains. Ask about drainage.
- Artificial turf — consistent surface, all-weather. Check the infill type (rubber vs. cork) and age. Old turf gets hard and hot.
- Dirt/clay — fine for baseball/softball. Check the grading — puddles mean a cancelled practice.
Indoor facilities:
- Sport court — multipurpose, good for basketball and volleyball
- Hardwood — premium basketball, indoor soccer
- Indoor turf — soccer, lacrosse, field hockey. Check ceiling height.
If photos on the listing don't show the playing surface clearly, that's a red flag. Learn more about choosing the right facility for your needs.
Amenities That Actually Matter
Forget the marketing buzzwords. These are the amenities that affect your practice:
| Amenity | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| **Lights** | No lights = no evening practices. Verify they're included in the price. |
| **Restrooms** | Parents and players need them. Some remote fields have none. |
| **Parking** | 15 families arriving at once need more than 5 spots. |
| **Water access** | Filling water bottles from a hose isn't ideal but beats nothing. |
| **Storage** | Can you leave goals, nets, or equipment? Hauling everything weekly adds up. |
| **Scoreboard/clock** | Nice for scrimmages, not essential for practice. |
Don't pay extra for amenities you won't use. A basic field with lights, restrooms, and parking is better than a premium facility where half the amenities are irrelevant to your sport.
Cancellation and Weather Policy
This is where most coaches get burned. Read the policy before you book.
What to look for:
- How far in advance can you cancel without penalty? 24 hours? 48 hours?
- Weather cancellations — who decides if weather cancels the booking? What's the threshold?
- Make-up credits vs. refunds — credits keep you locked to that facility. Refunds give you flexibility.
On FieldPicker, if a facility cancels on you, you automatically get a make-up credit. No negotiation required.
Pricing Transparency
Red flags:
- "Call for pricing" — usually means expensive and negotiable, which means inconsistent
- Hidden fees — lights, field prep, setup, cleanup charged separately
- Minimum booking requirements — 2-hour minimums when you only need 90 minutes
Green flags:
- Hourly rate displayed upfront — you know what you're paying before you contact anyone
- All-inclusive pricing — lights, field, amenities included in the posted rate
- No long-term commitment — book what you need, when you need it
Photos and Reviews
Photos tell you what the facility looks like today, not what it looked like at its grand opening. Look for:
- Recent photos (check metadata or seasonal clues)
- Photos of the actual playing surface, not just the lobby
- Photos that show the surrounding area (parking, access)
Reviews from other coaches are gold. Look for mentions of:
- Field condition and maintenance
- Communication and responsiveness
- Whether the facility honored its posted schedule and pricing
Location and Access
The cheapest field 45 minutes away costs more than the moderately-priced one 15 minutes from your players. Factor in:
- Drive time for your team — not just for you, but for the parents doing the driving
- Traffic patterns — a 15-minute drive at 2 PM is a 40-minute drive at 5 PM
- Neighborhood safety — evening practices in poorly lit areas are a hard sell for families
